The Birth of Sacred Surrogacy

From the moment of conception, pregnancy is full of ups and downs and it’s important to have a supportive team cheering you on through the challenges. For those experiencing a traditional pregnancy, many can turn to their family and friends for encouragement. But for those who are using surrogacy as an alternative means of reproduction, these conventional support systems may not be as understanding. That’s why I created Sacred Surrogacy, a pregnancy program with a mission to empower both surrogate mothers and intended parents throughout their surrogacy journey.

After attending one of Anni Daulter’s Sacred Pregnancy retreats, I was inspired by Anni’s holistic and reverential approach to pregnancy. As the founder and CEO of Canadian Fertility Consulting, I knew how reaffirming this approach would be, not only for the pregnant surrogate women I work with on a daily basis, but also for the prospective parents who often felt alienated by the process. This experience sparked within me a desire to reach out to Anni to collaborate on developing Sacred Surrogacy, a pregnancy program with a mission is to honour those who are participating in the surrogacy process, encourage mindfulness and self-care practices throughout, and focus on the journey as the key to success.

While pregnancy can be uncomfortable and sometimes stressful, those moments when the baby first starts to kick, or discovering its gender through ultrasound, seem to make it all worth it. However, parents who have chosen to use a surrogate won’t have the ability to experience those celebratory moments firsthand. Many intended parents of surrogate babies have experienced some form of trauma, whether it’s due to infertility, failed egg retrieval, or a miscarriage. The path to surrogacy is often a winding road, and by the time many parents get to the point where they should be feeling hopeful, many find themselves desensitized by the process and disconnected from their emotions. That is where Sacred Surrogacy steps in.

Upon registering with Sacred Surrogacy, intended parents receive a subscription box full of mindfulness and self-care products, and they’re invited to attend a workshop that has been created with their needs in mind. In addition to traditional topics such as the birthing process and inducing lactation, these workshops also highlight the importance of connecting with the parent’s inner self and fosters a sense of community with other prospective parents.

These events provide a safe space for intended parents to talk about their fears in a supportive environment and set intentions with a group of like-minded individuals. Most importantly, Sacred Surrogacy encourages these parents to honour the beautiful gift of surrogacy, and to celebrate their perseverance along this journey to parenthood. For many parents, attending a Sacred Surrogacy retreat is their first encounter with others who are going through surrogacy too, and this feeling of connection and support can be life-changing.

Sacred Surrogacy’s retreats for surrogates also emphasizes this celebratory tone. For many women, being a surrogate can feel isolating, so participating in a retreat offers a supportive community in which to celebrate triumphs, along with providing any support needed to move past obstacles. The intention of these retreats is to celebrate these women and the beautiful life-giving gift they are sharing.

Throughout the retreat, women participate in activities that teach important life skills, such as establishing a yoga and meditation practice, nourishing themselves with wholesome and organic food, and developing effective communication strategies to benefit their relationships. A fear release ceremony allows women to let go any issues that are holding them back from being their best selves. A healing circle for those who may have experienced a loss helps recognize those experiences as much as the milestones in a pregnancy that ends with a birth.

I want to ensure that everyone who attends these retreats are encouraged and supported. I have seen surrogates thrive and really grow as individuals through the practices they’ve learned through Sacred Surrogacy and implemented in their daily lives: whether it be starting a meditation and yoga practice, or creating a sacred space in their homes, we hear back from many women that the skills and tools they have learned through this program have been transformational for them in their daily lives.

Currently, Sacred Surrogacy offers retreats for surrogates across Canada in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Nova Scotia. In the past we have held retreats internationally in England, Australia, and San Diego. Retreats for intended parents currently take place three times a year in Toronto, Ontario and have also taken place internationally.

All surrogates and intended parents from anywhere in the world are invited to take part in the Sacred Surrogacy program, even if they are involved with a fertility agency other than Canadian Fertility Consulting. It’s my goal and hope that people within the surrogacy community join us in the Sacred Surrogacy movement. We are always interested in hosting retreats sponsored by other agencies or organizations, for any surrogates or intended parents to attend.

I believe there is a way to celebrate pregnancy, and specifically surrogacy, in a deeper and more meaningful way. Sacred Surrogacy is there to fulfill that need. My goal is that intended parents and surrogates develop self-care practices throughout this journey, to ensure that when this journey has ended, however that may be, that people walk away from this process gaining mindful strategies to help them move forward into the next chapter in their lives.
