Coming Home to Ourselves

A Weekend of Connection in Tatamagouche: Nova Scotia Retreat

There is something special that happens when women who share an extraordinary experience come together in the same room.

This past weekend in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, Sacred Surrogacy welcomed surrogates from across Eastern Canada for a weekend of connection, reflection, laughter, learning, and community.

What made this retreat so meaningful was the diversity of journeys represented around the circle. There were women who were completely new to surrogacy, just beginning to explore what becoming a surrogate might mean for them. There were women in the early stages of joining Canadian Fertility Consulting and preparing to begin their own Sacred Surrogacy journey. There were pregnant surrogates in the middle of the experience, carrying babies for families who are waiting and dreaming of meeting them.

Different stages, different stories, different reasons for being there, and still there was a shared understanding.

A Space to Connect

Sacred Surrogacy retreats are about more than getting away for a weekend. They offer space to step outside of the everyday responsibilities of being a mother, partner, employee, caregiver and, for many, a surrogate, and simply be a woman among others who understand.

Throughout the weekend, there was time to talk, listen, laugh, reflect, and share. There were conversations about surrogacy, but also about motherhood, identity, our bodies, relationships, emotions, and the experiences that can be difficult to explain to people who haven’t lived them.

Sometimes, the most powerful part of a retreat isn’t learning something new. It’s hearing someone else say, ‘Me too.’

Learning From One Another

One of the most meaningful aspects of bringing surrogates together is that everyone has something to offer. A woman considering surrogacy can ask questions of someone who has already been through the process. A new surrogate can hear from someone who is pregnant. A pregnant surrogate can connect with women who have already completed their journeys.

The insight doesn’t only come from facilitators or professionals. It comes from the women themselves. At its core, Sacred Surrogacy is about creating spaces where women can share their experiences, learn from one another, and build friendships that extend beyond the retreat weekend. Caring for the Whole Woman

Surrogacy is an incredible commitment, but a surrogate is more than the pregnancy she is carrying. That’s why Sacred Surrogacy retreats intentionally make space for the whole person: mind, body, and heart.

The weekend included opportunities for reflection, connection, and practices designed to help participants slow down and reconnect with themselves. Retreats often incorporate sharing circles, mindfulness practices, relaxation, wellness experiences, and time for personal reflection.

These moments are not meant to add to a to-do list. They are an invitation to pause, to breathe, to listen to your body, and to remember that you deserve care, too.

Celebrating Every Stage of the Journey

There isn’t one ‘right’ way to be a surrogate. You can be thinking about surrogacy, preparing for your first transfer, pregnant, newly postpartum, or have completed your journey years ago. You still belong.

The Tatamagouche retreat was a reminder that every stage comes with its own questions, emotions, challenges, and celebrations, and that there is real value in being surrounded by women who have been there, are there, or are just beginning.

The Power of Community

What stood out most from the weekend wasn’t a single activity or conversation. It was the feeling of community: sitting beside women who don’t need the entire story explained, laughter that comes easily when strangers become friends, conversations that continue long after the schedule ends, quiet moments of reflection, and stories shared around the table.

Each experience is different, yet connected. Sacred Surrogacy was created around the belief that community matters, and retreats bring that belief to life by offering a place where women can come together, be seen, be heard, learn from one another, and simply enjoy being together.

Thank You, Tatamagouche

To every woman who joined us this weekend, thank you.

Thank you for showing up with your stories, your questions, your wisdom, your laughter, and your openness. Thank you to the women just beginning to explore surrogacy, the women taking those first steps with Canadian Fertility Consulting, and the pregnant surrogates who are already deep in their journeys.

Each of you brought something unique to the circle, and together, you created something that cannot be replicated on a screen or captured in a schedule: a community, a sisterhood, and a reminder that this journey belongs to the women living it, and that there is a place for every woman within it.

Until the next retreat, may you carry a little of that Tatamagouche feeling home with you.

You are not alone. Your story matters. Your body matters. And there is a community of women here to walk beside you.
